Hidden away in random locations like industrial estates or in the countryside, you may be able to spot a storage facility. More and more seem to be sprouting as demand for storage seems to be on the up. The reasons for this are unclear, but the options available seem to be quite impressive, with various sizes of storage units available to companies, government organisations and everyday people.
The locations of these self storage facilities tend to be sparse locations due to the low cost of the property. With the nature of the business, it is important to gain as much space as possible for the lowest cost. Therefore travelling to these locations can be troublesome but it is a necessary evil to take advantage of the lower prices charged because of this.
The storage units on offer can vary greatly in size, from the size of a locker to a garage or in some cases even bigger than that. The size a customer will choose is largely dependent on what they plan on storing. For example a company may be downsizing due to the economic recession. This would lead to a possible move to a smaller premises, where they no longer need as much furniture or office supplies. If they were optimistic that the market will pick up again in the future, they may wish to store this until they found a use for it again. In this case, the company would purchase a very large storage unit in the hope that one day, they'll be able to use the furniture. However, this would only be viable if they saw storage as a cheaper option than selling it and purchasing other equipment and furniture in the future.
Another example of how a company could make use of these facilities, is if they dealt with a lot of paperwork. Hospitals, law firms and market research companies are just a few examples of organisations which tend to generate a lot of paperwork. It is not always financially efficient to store this paperwork on site, as it can take up a lot of room, which may be better used for workspace. Therefore some organisations tend to use self storage facilities to move this paperwork off site.
However, not only do companies take advantage of these facilities, as normal people can choose to use them for various reasons. Houses can become overcrowded with all types of things and instead of choosing to throw the stuff away, people can choose to store it away for the time being. Another reason for using a facility, would be as a stop gap between moving houses. For one reason or another, you may find youself without a home after selling your own, and not having a new one to place all your furniture and belongings. With storage, this gives people the flexibility and the time needed to find a new home. In addition, a person may just want to store valuables such as family relics, jewellery or antiques, that they would not feel safe having at home.
At the end of the day, storage facilities offer companies and people space which they may not already have. Through storage, space is freed up for alternative and generally better uses.
