For most students, University is their first experience of living away from home. Discovering your independence at college is an exciting part of life, but it is also comes with a whole range of extra (and unexpected) things to think about. Accommodation is one of them. Student digs are usually a small room in a student hall or shared house and need to be vacated when term ends.
It’s long been the case that you live amongst your stuff in term-time and lug it all back home for the holidays. The UK’s student exodus is as traditional as roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, luggage racks on trains and coaches that are bursting with backpacks and suitcases, old cars on motorways packed to the roof with duvet's and bedding... all familiar sights as the holidays kick-in.
But there is a solution that can bring an end to the ritual to-and-fro of belongings. Rent yourself a storage locker at a local self storage facility and your days as a student nomad, struggling with all that baggage are gone. Whether its clothing, bedding, sports equipment, musical instruments or just somewhere to keep your practical coursework, a storage locker is a cheap and convenient way of keeping your student room clutter free. A storage locker is your very own private storage facility, a safe, secure and self-contained unit within a storage facility full of safe, secure and self-contained storage units. With so many self storage companies and facilities to choose from you can almost guarantee there will be one on your University doorstep.

You’d be surprised just how much you can fit in too, and just how cheap a storage locker can be. Prices vary according to location and demand but a typical locker in central London (about as expensive as it gets) could cost you as little as £15 per week. That’s less than a round of drinks in the Student Union bar.
The self storage industry is hugely competitive so there are lots of deals to be found too. It’s well worth shopping around for deal sweeteners, such as lowest price promises, 10% NUS discount or even free van hire.
With all those deals on offer, pricing can sometimes be confusing. Look out for clauses that stipulate minimum storage terms and early move-out fees but most providers charge by the week, whilst some (usually best for students who are after cheap short-term storage deals) offer pay by the day storage.
One way to really save money is to team up with trusted house or hall-mates and rent a larger storage unit between you. More space can be cheaper when you divide it up. So it is worth looking at how much space you need (all reputable storage companies will be able to you work that out) and joining together to rent a storage unit, rather than a storage locker.

You’ll also need to get insurance for your stuff whilst it is in store almost all storage companies will expect you to use theirs, so check the cost of this as well as the storage costs. You will also need a padlock and all reputable self storage companies will sell these over the counter. Also be aware that you are forbidden from storing flammable, perishable or illegal items.
Once you’ve got all that done, you’ll sign a storage agreement and you’re ready to move your stuff in. The agreement is basically the contract between you and the storage company which defines the size, cost and terms and conditions of your storage locker rental. So there you go, a cheap solution to being a student pack-horse at the end of term.
